Missing teeth not only create problems in chewing and mastication but also causes loss of the surrounding alveolar bone. When alveolar bone is lost, it also causes the adjacent muscles and cheeks to sag and gives an older appearance to a person.

Crown and Bridges in Vasai

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are fixed prostheses. They are different from the removable partial dentures which can be removed when required. Crowns form cap-like structures that surround the tooth. Crowns are placed over a single tooth and bridges are placed when there are one or more missing teeth.

What are the indications for crowns and bridges?

Indications for a crown:

  1. Root canal treatment: Any tooth that has been treated for a root canal is made functional with the help of a crown.
  2. Fractured or broken tooth
  3. Discoloured tooth

 Indications for bridge:

  1. One or more missing teeth.
  2. For smile correction
  3. Close wide spaces between the teeth

What are the different materials used for crowns and bridges?

  1.   Gold: Do not be surprised. Gold is one of the oldest materials used for crowns. Gold is an inert material and is highly compatible for usage in the oral cavity. Gold is not used in the pure form and is mixed with other metals that enhance its strength and resilience. It is one of the best materials to be used for the crowns; the only problem is the colour of the gold crowns which is not acceptable to everyone.
  2.   Ceramic:They are made up of only ceramic. They can be used in both anterior and posterior teeth. They are very good aesthetically. Ceramic crowns also cause the least or no sensitivity to vital teeth.

They require more cutting of the tooth due to the higher thickness of the crown. They are also not indicated for people who have a problem of clenching or grinding teeth, since they can cause damage to the opposing natural teeth.

  • Metal crowns: Various strong metals like chromium, gold, etc are used for the fabrication of metal alloys to be used for the crowns. These are very strong crowns and last for a long time. They require minimal cutting of the crown. The only drawback of metal crowns is the colour of the crown.
  • Porcelain fused to metal: This is a combination of metal and ceramic crowns. The base of the crown is made up of metal and the outer portion is of ceramic. This is widely used in dental practice as these crowns are aesthetically pleasing and strong as well. They have a long shelf life but the margins may start showing the metal lining due to attrition over some time.
  • Zirconium crowns: Zirconium is white metal. It is one of the newer materials used for crowns. They resemble the natural tooth. They are very strong and biocompatible. These crowns can also be layered with porcelain to give them a more natural look.

We deliver all types of crowns at Vasai Dental Care and Implant Clinic

How long do the crowns last?

The crowns can last anywhere between 8-15years. The shelf life of the crowns depends upon the dental hygiene practices and the amount of wear and tear they are exposed to.

When should I replace my dental crowns and bridges?

You may need replacement if:

  1. Crown has chipped off.
  2. Food lodgement around the area of the crown
  3. Breakage due to injury

How should I take care of my crowns?

  1. Maintain good oral hygiene: Keep your crowns and bridges clean just like you keep your natural teeth clean. Brushing twice daily and gargling after meals is sufficient to keep the crowns and the surrounding tissues healthy.
  2. Do not eat very hard or sticky food: Hard food can cause fracture of the crown and sticky food can cause dislodgement of the crown.
  3. Interdental brushes can be used to clean the spaces between the bridges.
  4. Visit your dentist every 6 months to get your prosthesis checked.
