What are the various smile designing procedures done at the clinic?

Bleaching

Bleaching is a procedure for whitening or lightening the shade of the teeth. This is done with the help of a bleaching agent that contains hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. The procedure is done effectively in the dental office. These agents penetrate the crystal structure of the enamel and break the stains.

Bleaching can be done by two techniques:

  1. In-office bleaching: This is done in the dental office. The bleaching agent used in the dental office is stronger than that used for the home bleaching technique. A single visit is for approximately 30-45 minutes. The bleaching process can be accentuated with the help of light or heat.

The results can be seen on the day of the procedure itself.

  1. Home bleaching: Home bleaching kits, bleaching pastes, and strips can be used for home bleaching. The results obtained are less than those seen in the office bleaching cases.

What is bleaching done for?

  1. Extrinsic or intrinsic stains
  2. Caffeine stains
  3. Chemical stains due to some medicines

Does bleaching have any contraindications?

  1. Anyone who has sensitive teeth should not opt for bleaching
  2. Anybody allergic to peroxide
  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers
  4. Gingival recession or people who have periodontal problems

Is bleaching permanent?

Like any other cosmetic procedure, bleaching needs to be repeated after 1.5-2 years. You should maintain good oral hygiene and restrict the intake of caffeinated drinks and quit smoking to prolong the effects of bleaching.

Veneers

Dental Veneers are very thin shells made up of tooth-coloured material. These are custom-made and designed to cover the anterior surface of the tooth to enhance its appearance.

When are Veneers indicated?

  • Discoloured teeth: Due to trauma or drug therapy.
  • Fluoride stains
  • Attrided teeth
  • Misaligned or broken teeth
  • Widely spaced teeth

What are the different types of veneers?

Veneers are of different types like:

  1. Composite veneers: These can be fabricated at the clinic itself. They are less time-consuming.
  2. Porcelain veneers: These have to be fabricated in the laboratory. The preparation is done in the clinic and the impressions are sent to the lab. These are stronger than the composite veneers and mimic the natural tooth better.

Dental crowns and bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are used to:

  1. Close the spaces in between the teeth
  2. Cover fractured or chipped off teeth
  3. Treat the discoloured teeth

Composite filings

Composites are resin, tooth-coloured materials that are used as a filling material. Composite resins are available in various shades and provide the closest imitation of natural teeth. Composite fillings can be used for:

  1. Cavity filling in anterior and posterior teeth
  2. Filling the spaces between teeth
  3. Slightly fractured or chipped off tooth

Gum surgeries

Some patients have a gummy smile or small crown length. This can be treated with the help of basic chair-side surgeries such as gingivectomy and gingivoplasty. These procedures are done under local anesthesia.

Orthodontic treatment

Various conditions like misaligned teeth, crowding, and spacing can be treated with the help of removable orthodontic appliances like Invisalign and fixed orthodontic appliance like braces. These are used for a major correction.

Dental Implants

If you have missing anterior teeth which are causing a hindrance in the smile, then dental implants are a very good option for you. Implants are long-lasting and provide a long-term solution to a missing tooth.
